Addiction Medicine

opiod addiction.jpg

Opioid dependence is the physical addiction to prescription pain killers or heroin. We are here to help people in northern Utah and the Bountiful area who are affected by this complex health problem. Dependency forms when the brain adapts to the regular use of opioids.

People with opioid dependency should work with a Bountiful addiction medicine specialist to begin treatment. Suboxone® is a prescription that can help patients get on the path to recovery. Suboxone® treatment is supplemented with treatment counseling, psychosocial support, and office-based support. Patients are closely monitored and under the care of an experienced physician who will administer the Suboxone®.

What is Suboxone®?

Suboxone® is a combination of naloxone and buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is an opioid medication, also known as a narcotic. Naloxone blocks the effects of opioid medication, such as feelings of well-being and pain relief. Blocking these sensations leads to a reduction in the patient’s opioid dependency.

How should I take Suboxone®?

Your Cope Family Medicine doctor will give you clear directions for taking Suboxone®. Closely follow the directions on your prescription label and never take Suboxone® in larger amounts or longer than prescribed. Suboxone® can be habit-forming—never share Suboxone®. It is unlawful to misuse narcotic medication, as it can cause addiction and/or overdose. Inform your doctor of any other medicine you are taking or any that you start/stop taking, particularly sedatives.

What are the benefits of a Suboxone® treatment plan?

  • Suboxone® is effective and safe to use under the guidance of an experienced Cope Family Medicine physician

  • Suboxone® is long-lasting: once maintained, the prescription will vary from weekly to monthly, depending on the patient’s needs

  • Suboxone® offers a milder withdrawal and detoxification process

  • Suboxone® is administered by a Cope Family Medicine physician, so there is more flexibility then the methadone treatment program
